Community

Dear Customers,

We want to share with you some of our involvement in environmental sustainability and support for our local community.  Think of it as our lifelong list of New Year's Resolutions.  We feel that it is important that you, our customers have confidence in our integrity as cafe hosts.

Pledge #1  The Blue Bird Cafe supports local producers by sourcing our jams, pickles, chutneys, etc. from the Brookong Nook Craft Shop and The Rock CWA.  (That is of course when we have not made them ourselves.)

Pledge #2  The Blue Bird Cafe grows our own culinary herbs to complement our food flavours.  We do this organically using hand watering and lovingly tending our plants each day.  We make no claims to being certified organic but I enjoy nurturing the garden.

Pledge #3  The Blue Bird Cafe composts all of our kitchen waste in CLOey.

Pledge #4  The Blue Bird Cafe recycles all plastics, cans, paper, etc.  Leave your dining recyclables at your table with the confidence that we will do the right thing by the environment.  We also remove litter left outside the cafe.

Pledge #5  The Blue Bird Cafe endeavours to make all our food from scratch avoiding processed factory food as much as possible.  We use locally grown produce and Australian made groceries over imported goods.  This includes supporting SPC and Golden Circle.

Pledge #6  The Blue Bird Cafe has a long term commitment to energy efficiency and we are constantly endeavouring to reduce our commercial waste and energy use.

Pledge #7  The Blue Bird Cafe encourages you to dine-in and reduce takeaway packaging waste.

Pledge #8  The Blue Bird Cafe uses free-range eggs and looks forward to the opening of our local butcher next door with an emphasis on free-range and quality meat.  We support and use local suppliers where possible.

Pledge #9  The Blue Bird proprietors are committed to preserving an important piece of Australian cultural history by looking after a precious heritage building and identity.  If you would like to help us achieve in this endeavour, please contact us on bluebirdlockhart@gmail.com for detailst.

As our business grows we have plans to improve the energy efficiency of the building as an ongoing part of the preservation restoration work we are undertaking.

  2. We visited you during last year and loved your cafe. I remember that you collected/used the orange coffee cups/mugs in your shop - just saw these on our local buy swap sell. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=256931547833701&set=oa.644597308981742&type=1&theater and thought you might be interested.
